The Immigration Department has made recent changes to the visa program for General Skilled Migration (General Scheme Migration (GSM)). Some changes have come into effect from year 2009. The changes are:

• Changes to evaluate the qualifications of foreign applicants for admission to certain commercial pursuits. (May 2009)
• Changes in Requirements Language (July 2009).
• Review of Occupations in Demand List (MODL).

• New priorities in the process of visa applications for some of the GSM (September 2009).
• Refund in cases of excessive payments by the application of visa.

• Getting tough on Language Requirements (January 2010).
• Introduction of new Test Suitable for candidates to work in GSM (January 2010).

Changes to evaluate the qualifications of foreign applicants for admission to certain commercial pursuits.

From May 15, 2009 applicants overseas GSM Program wishing to be assessed for access to an occupation of the SOL list can do so through the authority of a country participating in the Consortium VETASSES , which includes the following countries (Philippines, India, UK, Sri Lanka and South Africa) or continue routinely making the request to Australian Recognition Authority Occupation (TRA).
