From January 2010, increases to (6.0) average in the English language requirements for applicants to the General Skilled Migration Program (GSM).

The changes will apply to candidates GSM:

  • Nominees in a commercial occupancy.
  • who apply for a Regional Sponsored Visa (Subclass 475).



Previously:

- A nominee in a commercial occupancy were required to obtain at least 5.0 points on average in each of the four components of Test International Assessment of English Language (IELTS), now must obtain at least 6.0 points in order to fulfill the language requirement.

- A candidates for Regional Sponsored visa were required to average at least 5.5 points in each of the four components of IELTS, also now must average at least 6.0 points in the exams to be eligible to meet the language requirements .

These changes in the English language requirements will be applied to all GSM applications that will accrue to Immigration after January 1, 2010. Persons who have applied before this date for these categories of visas not be affected by the change.

How this change will be affected by regional provisional visas?

In recognition and correspondence to the increase in language requirements for candidates outside a Regional Sponsored visa (subclass 475), carriers of a Regional Sponsored visa (subclass 487), based in Australia will be asked to to enroll in a training course in the English language.
